Nowhere Girl—Published September 2025

What makes a place “home,” anyway?

Despite how far-fetched it might seem from her small midwestern town, Juliet Thatcher dreams of attending university in Europe, surrounded by the nature, culture, and history that inspired her favorite authors and artists. Unfortunately, this particular dream comes with a very high price tag—one that makes it seem impossible.

When Juliet hears that a local philanthropist is hosting a scholarship essay contest, she hopes that this is the opportunity that she has been looking for. To enter, all she will have to do is write an essay about her hometown. But because Juliet spent her growing-up years moving around, she has never felt like she has a “hometown”—and has no idea how to even begin writing the essay.

With the chance to achieve her dreams on the line, Juliet needs to face her complicated feelings about how she grew up.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

HannahGrace Bowen wrote her first book when she was seven years old—the story of a mouse who discovered an enchanted underwater kingdom. Although she does not currently have any projects in development featuring rodent protagonists, she is not opposed to returning to her roots if the right idea presented itself.

Now, she writes stories that prioritize storytelling over adhering to established genre tropes. She enjoys challenging these genre expectations in service of writing with an authentic narrative voice and being honest about the nuances of life—allowing those contradictions space to coexist without providing easy answers.

HannahGrace Bowen is an alumna of The Author Conservatory, a college alternative for aspiring career authors. She graduated in 2026 with a certificate in Writing and Business.

She put her publishing and marketing skills into practice when her short story, Nowhere Girl, was published in the anthology Voices of the Future: Stories of Strength and Sacrifice .

In her spare time she enjoys people watching, going on long walks, and passionately discussing the merits of her favorite novels with anyone willing to listen.
